MSERA OPERATIONS MANUAL: Responsibilities and Duties of Officers

Office of Vice President/President-Elect

The Vice President/President-Elect is elected by MSERA members in attendance at the Business Meeting held during the Annual Meeting. In accordance with the Constitution, Article IV, Section 2.a., the Vice President shall serve for one year and shall succeed automatically to the office of President for one year.

In accordance with the Bylaws, Article 11, Section 2.a. & b., the Vice President/President-Elect shall assume the following responsibilities:

  1. Assist the President at all times.
  2. In case of the resignation or incapacity of the President, assume the office of the President and complete the unexpired term. In such case, the Vice President shall serve the subsequent term as President.
  3. Shall be responsible for the preparation and dissemination of current revisions and additions to the Manual of the Association.
  4. Will chair the committee that selects the persons to receive the Outstanding Paper and the Herbert Handley Thesis/Dissertation Awards at the Annual Meeting of the Association. The Vice President/President-Elect also obtains the plaques and checks for the research paper winners and the gift (plaque or alternate gift) for the President to be presented at the Annual Meeting. At the discretion of the President the Vice President/President-Elect may also obtain the plaque for the Harry L. Bowman Award.
  5. Serves as an ex officio member of the Board of Directors of the Mid-South Educational Research Foundation.
  6. It is desirable that the Vice President have input into the designating of committee co-chairs, especially for the Program Committee, so that the co-chairs who move up to the chairmanship of committees during the subsequent year, in essence, be designated by the President to whom they will be responsible and will have some experience and insight into the functioning of the committees that they chair.

Although the term of office technically runs until December for the President, the President-Elect probably will begin making plans and organizing for the coming year during the period following the Annual Meeting.
