MSERA OPERATIONS MANUAL: Committees

Graduate Student Advisory Committee

Purpose

The purpose of the Graduate Student Advisory Committee is to place the needs and accomplishments of graduate students before the view of the MSERA membership. The committee also provides an opportunity for graduate students to meet the MSERA Board at the annual reception and to make acquaintance with graduate students of other institutions.

Responsibilities

Evaluate the need for and desirability of activities at the Annual Meeting planned for graduate students. In light of the results of such evaluation, organize activities to meet the needs of graduate students that include a reception and a session with the keynote speaker that are limited to graduate students, and sessions at the Annual Meeting including graduate students or based on topics of special interest to them.

Schedule activities that include the Graduate Student/New Member Breakfast held on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. All Annual Meeting activities are to be scheduled with the chair of the Program Committee and the President. The chair of the Program Committee must be aware of all activities occurring at the Annual Meeting if they are to be listed in the program, and space requirements for the Annual Meeting are coordinated through the chairs of the Program Committee and the Local Arrangements Committee.

Through an announcement in the MSERA Researcher prior to the Annual Meeting, notify graduate students involved in MSERA of the purpose of the graduate student activities and encourage them to participate. The editors of the MSERA Researcher will contact the chair of the committee for materials to include in each issue of the MSERA Researcher.

In the past, this committee has organized special sessions (discussion/symposia) at the Annual Meeting for graduate students (topics thought to appeal to graduate students but sessions not labeled as limited to or especially for graduate students).
